To combat news deserts across the country and provide important journalistic experience for college students and recent graduates, the Scripps Howard Fund is providing grants to nonprofit newsrooms to fund internships. The Fund has partnered with the Institute for Nonprofit News to select 24 newsrooms. These newsrooms are based in different locations across the country, and each provides different learning opportunities.

How can I apply? You can apply to the 24 newsrooms with this universal application. You must make an account with Submittable to read all of the job descriptions and submit your application.
When is the deadline? The application deadline is 11:59 p.m., ET, Saturday, January 31.
How long are these internships? There are 10 and 20-week internships offered.
Are these paid internships? Yes. Each internship pays a minimum of $15 per hour.
Are these part-time opportunities? No. Each internship is expected to provide a full-time job experience. You will work at least 32 hours each week.
Do I get a stipend upfront? You will be paid via the host newsroom on its payroll schedule.
Who is eligible to apply? Current university undergraduate/graduate school students and those who will graduate during the 2025-26 school year are eligible to apply.
What materials are required for application? You will need your resume, cover letter and at least one example of your work. Each newsroom could have additional requirements, so please read the job descriptions carefully.
Do I have to complete the application in one sitting? No, there is an opportunity to save your draft within Submittable and return to it, in progress.
Can I apply to more than one newsroom? Yes, there is an opportunity on the application to submit to more than one newsroom. You can apply to one, several or all of the newsrooms.
When will candidates be notified about their application status? We are asking newsrooms to have their candidates hired by mid-March 2026.

What does it mean if my status changes in Submittable? Please disregard any shifts from “In-progress” or “Completed.” We are working to find the ideal organization process.
What happens after I submit my application and materials? Hiring managers from each newsroom that you applied to will review your material. They will contact you directly if they are interested in an interview, etc. throughout February and early March.
What happens next? Hiring managers will make the internship offer to their desired candidate directly. Once all the newsrooms have made their choices, all the other applicants will be notified.
What if I receive an offer before I hear back from this internship? Managers know you are applying to other internships/jobs and cannot afford to wait to secure your next move. Make the best decision for you.
What should I expect if I am hired by a newsroom? Once you are hired by a host newsroom you will be asked to complete the required paperwork. You will be eligible to apply for additional financial help from a support fund to help alleviate any obstacles (travel expenses, rent, work clothes) that might interfere with you accepting or completing the internship. You will also be expected to participate in the weekly professional development sessions. These virtual sessions will introduce you to other interns and journalists across the country.
