The New York Assistant Director Training Program is designed to provide opportunities for a limited number of individuals to become Assistant Directors of motion pictures. This is a two-year program consisting of 350 days of on-the-job training combined with seminars. A rotation system places Trainees on the sets of various features, television series and commercials shooting primarily in the New York City vicinity. Trainees become paid employees of the production on which they have been assigned. They work under the supervision of DGA members – Second Assistant Directors, First Assistant Directors and Unit Production Managers – on a variety of projects until graduation.
Trainees are chosen annually. A formal application must be filed in order to participate in the selection process involving testing and interviewing. The application for the 2027 Program is now available on our website. The deadline for submission is December 1, 2026.
Upon successful completion of the Program, graduates are eligible for membership in the DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA as Second Assistant Directors.
