In just over a year, 12-15 September 2027, the Interstellar Research Group and the Georgia Tech Space Research Institute will be jointly hosting the Tenth Interstellar Symposium on the GT campus in Atlanta, Georgia. This will be a multi-day gathering that unites experts from diverse, often siloed scientific, technical, social science, and humanities disciplines to address the foundational challenges of achieving sustainable multi-planetary and multi-stellar human habitation. Our reach goes far beyond physical scientists. We hope that you can encourage your journalism and communications students to participate.
The Tenth Interstellar Symposium will feature plenary lectures, poster sessions, workshops, and dedicated networking opportunities. By design, the event creates space for serendipitous connections among participants who might not otherwise interact—astrophysicists with ethicists, engineers with historians, and biologists with policy experts. Students building careers in communications will be able to meet and interact with professionals in their field who are focused on space exploration, with the ability to follow up later on individual projects.
We’d like to expand the audience to include more undergraduate and graduate students, especially in the Southeast U.S. While standard registration will be approximately $300, we are offering $25 registration to all students. And we would like to offer free registration to selected student ambassadors who will publicize the event among their peer groups, whether through on-campus channels or their own social media. These students will be helping us create event coverage, interview participants, work with campus and local media, and produce photography and video coverage of the symposium.
Separately, we are also soliciting student volunteers to help with logistics preparations and operations for the symposium, whether remote or on-site. There is a long list of tasks necessary to bring off a quality symposium of this scope, and as an all-volunteer organization, we rely on students to help make it happen. Any student can volunteer at the link below.
I hope some of your students will want to get involved! Please forward this email as widely as you wish, or send a link to our website at <https://irg.space/irg-2027/>. If you have student organizations focused on media and communications, please forward this to them. And if you’re interested in integrating this work with existing internship or experiential learning programs, please contact us to see if we’re a good fit.
If you have any questions, please contact me by email or phone below. Thanks very much, and we appreciate your help in building a successful symposium as one step towards getting humanity to the stars.
Sincerely,
Stephen Fleming
