This is a paid, in-person (on-campus) Fall 2025 internship.Spanish literacy is required to work with primary sources.
Some coursework in Cuba, Latin America and the Caribbean, and/or the Gulf is preferred.
The selected intern:
– Will receive a $1,200 stipend.
– May qualify for an additional $500 to support a weekend research trip to a Cuban archive (e.g., in Miami, Tampa, or Key West).
– Will earn 3-credits (“IDS4940: Internship” graded S/U) in Fall 2025.
– Will be featured as the curator of a final Digital Exhibit hosted by Smathers Libraries.
– Will be featured as the presenter in a public event (Spring 2026) hosted by the Graham Center.
Primary responsibilities include:
– Complete a three-week orientation on LACC’s archival systems and select a research topic in consultation with mentors.
– Conduct focused archival research on themes such as Cuban-American migration, environmental histories, or transnational trade.
– Propose and carry out a funded weekend research trip to a Gulf-related archive, if relevant to the project.
– Collaborate with library staff to design and build a digital exhibit using archival materials and visual storytelling.
– Publish a curated digital exhibit on the Smathers Libraries platform for public and academic audiences.
– Present research findings and the exhibit in a public forum during the following semester.
The internship totals 135 hours. Students will complete 120 hours of experiential work (10 hours/week over 12 weeks). The remaining 15 hours are reserved for academic assignments such as reflection essays and preparation for the public presentation.
