“AI as Lab Assistant: Perceptions of Scientists Using Artificial Intelligence in Their Work”

This research project explores how the public perceives scientists across various fields when they incorporate AI into their research. This fall, we will conduct interviews with scientists and members of the public, followed by online experimental studies in the spring. We are seeking one motivated undergraduate student to assist with this project.

Responsibilities

  1. Team Meetings:
    • We will meet as a team biweekly (for 30 to 60 minutes) to check in, update assignments, and discuss progress. Meeting times will be scheduled based on the availability of all team members. Most work can be completed independently on your own schedule.
  2. Interview Coordination (October–November):
    • You will help arrange and conduct interview sessions (either in-person or via Zoom) with participants. Some participants may prefer meetings during standard business hours (9–5), but scheduling will depend on mutual availability.
  3. Experiment Support (January-May):
    • You will help design and create the stimuli for the online experiment.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (for conducting interviews)
  • Basic design skills (familiarity with tools like Photoshop or other design software)

Supervision and Learning Opportunities
You will work under the guidance of Dr. Won-Ki Moon and Dr. Benjamin Johnson. Throughout the project, you will gain experience in theoretical frameworks, hypothesis development, survey and experimental design, statistical analysis, and academic writing.

Commitment and Compensation

  • Time commitment: 5 hours per week
  • Compensation: $13/hour
  • Hours and duration are flexible based on your availability, with the project running through May 2025.
